Lanaris proud to carry family football legacy
To advance Saturday's USF home game against Florida Atlantic, we have a feature story in Friday's Times on Bulls linebacker Michael Lanaris, who has a long history of college football players on both sides of his family. Pictured left is his grandfather Jim Munnis, who played end for Miami in the 1950s, and Lanaris' great-grandfather, Frederick Bell, played tackle for Ohio State in 1917-18 before serving in the U.S. Army in World War I. Lanaris' name has a special meaning, as he was named for his father's older brother, who died before Michael was born.
"We're just working-class folks, and he's just kind of a throwback, hard-working kid," said his father Mark, who made the team at Western Carolina in 1977 as a walk-on defensive tackle. "He's always at his best when he's climbing. We're just so pleased and proud of him, keeping a positive attitude, his love of the game. He steps into a whole other world when he gets on the football field. That's where he's most comfortable in life."
Thanks much to the University of Miami for the archive photo of Munnis.
