Late run keeps USF women perfect at 7-0
TAMPA -- Up just 48-44 on Florida Gulf Coast with under eight minutes to play, USF's women's basketball team went on a 14-0 run, pulling away to a 67-46 win to stay perfect with a 7-0 record this season.
"It was that run with seven or eight minutes left, where we strung stops together and converted on the other end," said coach Jose Fernandez, who went with a smaller lineup against a five-guard look from Florida Gulf Coast.
The Bulls (7-0) match their best record since 2006-07, and did so Wednesday with defense, holding FGCU to 26 percent shooting for the game. USF committed a season-low eight turnovers, a focus after struggling in that area early in the season.
"Coach is putting the emphasis on playing fast but under control," said Andrell Smith, who led the Bulls with 19 points and had no turnovers in the second half. Inga Orekhova went 4-for-5 on 3-pointers and scored 15 points, while Andrea Smith had 14 points.
