LB McKenzie out for '09 with torn ACL
Former USF linebacker Tyrone McKenzie, just drafted 11 days ago by the New England Patriots, will miss the 2009 NFL season after suffering a partial tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
McKenzie, a third-round draft pick from Riverview, confirmed Wednesday that he'll be undergoing surgery to repair his knee later this month in Boston. He injured his knee during a rookie minicamp on Saturday morning and did not return to practice the rest of the weekend. McKenzie said the injury isn't serious but the surgery is the best option for his long-term health and future in the NFL.
McKenzie has led USF in tackles in each of the last two seasons, and became just the third player in USF history to be drafted in the first three rounds when the Patriots drafted him.
