LB Spires starts classes, will play in '10

Former Plant linebacker Donte Spires, who last played for USF in 2007, said he is starting spring classes Monday and will return to the Bulls to play as a senior this fall.

Spires, who had 15 tackles as a reserve linebacker in 2007, returned to the team last spring and was competing for a spot on USF's depth chart, but left the team in August due to financial and academic reasons.

Spires said he would have been on scholarship for his last year with the Bulls, but said he isn't sure if that will be the case since Jim Leavitt was fired Friday. The Bulls will enter next season with two other rising seniors, Sabbath Joseph and Jacquian Williams, penciled in as starters at outside linebacker, but Spires could push for one of the outside positions.
