Leavitt still seeking kicker: Maybe Craigslist?
USF's season opener against Wofford is just eight days away, and coach Jim Leavitt is still hoping to find another kicker to help with kickoff duties for the Bulls this fall.
With sophomore Maikon Bonani sidelined for the season after injuring his back this summer, the Bulls would presently have senior Delbert Alvarado handling punts, field goals, extra points and kickoffs.
Leavitt has brought in soccer players, has encouraged any and all kickers to stop by through three weeks of preseason practice, and the search went to another level Friday. The Bulls' football page at Twitter.com went so far as to tweet the phone number for the football office -- we'll go ahead and tell you it's (813) 974-7170. Ask for special teams coach John Hendrick. Seriously.
"If you think you can help out, call special teams coach John Hendrick at 813-974-7170," the tweet said, with another tweet directing people to a story on USF's official site.
And while Texas Tech had success with exactly this kind of fan-in-the-stands turned kicker story last season, it probably doesn't bode well for the other five kicking specialists on USF's roster. In addition to Alvarado, USF has redshirt freshman punter Justin Brockhaus-Kann on scholarship, plus a slew of walk-ons -- junior Ilia Petrov, who punted for USF briefly in 2006, redshirt freshman Eric Schwartz, who kicked in the spring game, preferred walk-on punter Austin Pullaro, plus freshman Renato Proia, a walk-on goalkeeper for the Bulls who joined the football team after a tryout.
Leavitt has been careful to make it clear he's trying to establish depth behind Alvarado, just in case he should be injured during the season, but the search is starting to look a bit desperate for the Bulls.
