Links and notes: Back to Vero on Saturday
Lots of links and notes to catch up on while I'm back in Tampa -- I'll drive back over to Vero Beach on Saturday morning to see USF's first football scrimmage of the fall. Skip Holtz has said he'll make his initial decisions as to depth charts, position changes and freshmen redshirting based on what he sees there, so it's a big opportunity for players to show what they've been working toward.
-- Got the Sports Illustrated college football preview in the mail Thursday, and SI is projecting USF to go 6-6 overall and 3-4 in the Big East for a sixth-place finish. SI has four USF opponents ranked in its preseason top 25 -- No. 7 Florida, No. 15 Miami, No. 16 Pittsburgh and No. 18 Cincinnati.
-- Few new Big East preseason polls are out -- volleyball was picked to finish sixth in the league, while men's soccer was picked to finish third in what should be a closely contested Big East Red Division. USF's women's soccer team was picked to finish fourth in the Big East American Division -- always amuses me that men's and women's soccer have different names for their divisions.
-- Former USF player and grad assistant Mike Lube is now on the coaching staff at Clearwater High, where he'll coach both lines and run the weight room while helping with the offense. That's three former USF grad assistants now coaching in Clearwater, with Patrick St. Louis working on Jared Davis' staff at Countryside.
-- Northjersey.com has a feature on former USF defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul -- wild to think that a year ago, he hadn't yet arrived at USF. And former Bulls stars Jerome Murphy and George Selvie are rampaging through Rams camp.
-- Some of you asked for an Associated Press story on Eagles safety Nate Allen that ran in Thursday's Times.
-- Bright House Sports Network's J.B. Long offers five reasons why the Bulls will win the Big East.
-- Recruiting update from the Times' Ed Encina on two Plant standouts USF had targeted -- QB Philip Ely picked Alabama and OT Tony Posada picked Michigan.
-- This is a few days old, but Dominique Jones picked up some playing time in Dallas as fellow Mavs guard Roddy Beaubois broke his foot while playing in France.
-- Should have word on USF baseball's new pitching coach soon -- the Bulls were picked as one of 2010's top 10 disappointments by Rivals.com's Kendall Rogers. Also, the Daytona Beach News-Journal reports that New Smyrna Beach High's Blake Sydeski has committed to play for Lelo Prado in 2011-12.
-- USF wasn't close to doing it this year, but there's a cool site devoted to college programs signing more recruits than they have room for at oversigning.com.
-- ESPN.com's Brian Bennett writes about USF's bonding at Dodgertown this month.
