Links before heading to West Virginia ...

Technically, I'm headed to Pennsylvania today and probably won't head down from Pittsburgh to Morgantown until Saturday, but it's been a while since I've had a good links post. Lots of good stuff being written in anticipation of Saturday's regular-season finale. Today's high in Morgantown, by the way, is 28 degrees, and the forecast calls for snow Saturday night -- 50 percent chance at kickoff. Onto the links ...

-- Everybody's writing about USF's defense and the challenge they face in containing Pat White, Noel Devine and company. The Charleston Daily Mail writes about defensive end George Selvie, while the Charleston Gazette writes about the well-traveled Tyrone McKenzie. (Remind me to get in a note or two on McKenzie and last year's hit on Steve Slaton tonight). The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writes about defensive coordinator Wally Burnham, whose scheming has helped other teams find ways to beat West Virginia this season.

-- Cool potential twist in the Big East bowl picture, as the Newark Star-Ledger writes that super-hot Rutgers could wind up in the Motor City Bowl -- against an undefeated Ball State no less. One of the more intriguing matchups I've heard from the December bowl schedule. Another Star-Ledger story looks at the Big East's next cycle of bowl agreements and how they might be different -- like no baffling Gator/Sun shared contracts. And not to read into anything too much, but tell me if you can pick out the two Big East schools not mentioned in this quote from the league's Nick Carparelli Jr. ...

"Things were so much different the last time. Now Connecticut and Rutgers have proven track records as bowl teams and schools that bring a lot of fans and Cincinnati is an established program," Carparelli said. "People already knew about West Virginia, Louisville and Pittsburgh. Rutgers, especially, brings a tremendous presence now, not just in terms of fans but with the New York TV market it delivers."

-- Most disappointing team in the country? The Badger Herald in Wisconsin mentions USF as one of four schools worthy of the honor, but gives the nod to Clemson.

-- Here's a job you haven't heard much about: Illinois State. Their athletic director, Sheahon Zenger, was on Jim Leavitt's original staff at USF in 1996, and he's consulted Leavitt for advice about his current opening for a head coach. I'd be curious to know who Leavitt would suggest, on or off his current staff.

-- USF recruiting in Michigan? I've never heard of the Bulls venturing so far out of their traditional recruiting grounds, but they've apparently offered a defensive end from Michigan. I'll have to do some research and see what his ties to Florida or USF's staff might be ...

-- Speaking of recruits, a good story from Alan Dell of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune about Faron Hornes, a junior college receiver and return specialist who could wind up at USF.
