Links! Senior Bowl, USF soccer and more ...
Lots to get to -- the past month has been busy enough that we haven't had much time for links posts to what others are writing about USF athletics. There's a ton being written about USF's three players at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, and USF's @usfdraftbuzz page at Twitter.com is a good way to stay on top of all that.
If you're already hyperventilating three months before the draft, probably better you don't read a blog comment from the Sun-Sentinel that calls USF's Jason Pierre-Paul "a FREAK!!! The next LT and Demarcus Ware rolled into one!"
-- More on a huge pickup from USF soccer's pipeline from Trinidad and Tobago, as midfielder Leston Paul, the captain of Trinidad's national under-23 team, started classes this month at USF, according to The Trinidad Guardian. He drew USF's attention last year at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Egypt, and he's talented enough to be talking about the 2012 Olympic Games. Another story in the same paper suggests USF will allow him to train some with his national team in advance of the Olympics.
-- Former USF offensive coordinator Mike Canales said Tuesday that reports of him being close to a deal to take over the offense at North Texas were "premature," but the folks at the Denton Record Chronicle seem to think it's a done deal, calling it a "home run hire" for the Mean Green. Blog commenter there goes so far as to guess/hope/wish that previous USF commitment Brion Carnes might follow Canales to the Sun Belt. I'd be very surprised if that's the case ...
-- USF coach Skip Holtz is already working on future recruits as well -- the Times' Izzy Gould reports that USF is the first school to offer Land O'Lakes star QB Stevie Weatherford a scholarship. I covered his brother Drew in high school before he went on to Florida State, and another brother, Joe, is at Central Florida. Speaking of preps news, Durant linebacker Ruben Garcia hopes to walk on at USF and is turning down scholarships from smaller schools for the chance to do that.
-- In running through the former USF basketball players now playing elsewhere in college hoops, we mentioned we couldn't find point guard Dwan McMillan, a former USF signee. Thanks to the readers who pointed us to Indian Hills Community College in Iowa, where McMillan is now playing.
