Live blog: Bearcats up 34-17 on USF in 4th
Thursday night remains a bad night for USF to play football.
No. 8 Cincinnati has pulled away to a 34-17 lead in the fourth quarter, thanks to two rushing touchdowns from backup quarterback Zach Collaros, filling in for injured starter Tony Pike in the second half.
Down 24-10 late in the third quarter, USF's defense finally came through with a rare takeaway against Cincinnati. Jason Pierre-Paul got a hand on a Cincy pass that Nate Allen returned to the Bearcats 24. B.J. Daniels then went 23 yards to the 1, and his keeper cut Cincinnati's lead to 24-17.
Collaros answered with his second touchdown run of the game after a 43-yard pass to tight end Ben Guidugli for a 31-17 lead early in the fourth.
USF's defense had knocked Cincinnati quarterback Tony Pike out of the game, but Collaros scrambled 75 yards for a touchdown on third down to give the Bearcats a 24-10 lead in the third quarter.
Pike didn't make any mistakes and threw two touchdowns to receiver Armon Binns, giving the Bearcats a 17-10 lead on USF at halftime. Walk-on kicker Eric Schwartz connected on a 50-yard field goal as time expired to give USF some momentum going into the half.
USF led 7-3 after a touchdown from B.J. Daniels to Jessie Hester, but the Bulls have failed to score on their last three drives into Cincinnati's half of the field. Cincinnati's first touchdown was set up by an 83-yard interception return by Aaron Webster.
