Monday USF practice notes: A little hot for hugs
Updates on a few more notes after talking to USF coach Jim Leavitt after Monday's morning practice, which was crazy-hot even by Tampa-in-August standards:
-- On freshman Bradley Battles moving from running back to safety: "I don't think he really should, but I'm going to let him do what he wants. I liked him at running back, but if he wants to go to DB, that doesn't bother me. He's not going to play this year either way."
-- On junior Craig Marshall, who has worked primarily at end but was working as a first-team defensive tackle at one point Monday: "He can work both. He'll play three (defensive tackle next to nose) and end. He's been doing some real good things. We're really happy with him right now."
-- Asked if any players stood out, he mentioned Mike Ford, who played well in 3-on-3 drills, then said all the running backs had a good practice.
-- More praise -- and affection -- for freshman tight end Isaac Virgin: "Virgin's making a move. My goodness. That young man. We've got to get him in shape. It's going to take a little while to get used to all the running and things you do at tight end. We've got to give him some time, keep giving him some hugs."
-- As you guys have already pointed out in the comments, USF's Marc Dile is on the Bucs' first depth chart of the preseason, checking in as the No. 2 left guard. He's one spot ahead of former teammate Ryan Schmidt; not a good sign for the third Bull on roster, Jarriett Buie, that he's listed as the fourth-string defensive end.
