More than 1,000 at USF Sling 'n' Shoot camp
If things go right and the weather holds up, I'll be able to go over to campus today to see some of the second day of this weekend's massive Sling 'n' Shoot tournament, a 7-on-7 camp that has brought more than 1,000 high school football players to USF -- and that's with the event being split into two weekends to allow more teams to compete.
It's a huge recruiting event, and there's already some great coverage from Saturday's long (and very hot) first day. The Times' John C. Cotey has a great writeup -- he had us at "recruitarazzi" -- about what impressed him Saturday. USFbullseye.com's Corey Dowlar has put up not one but two free photo galleries -- he's even identifying aircraft flying over the fields.
-- Link to a story worth reading from ESPN.com's Dana O'Neil, who got a ton of blind quotes from basketball coaches about their industry and issues with agents, recruiting and the NCAA. I've got to think she reported most of this before the college football agent scandals started popping up, so it's that much more relevant to read now.
-- More weekend reading: The Times West Virginian's Bob Hertzel has a good point about conference networks like the Big Ten's from new WVU athletic director Oliver Luck, who says that he hasn't watched even 20 minutes of the Big Ten network, but he sends the conference money every month because it's part of the cable package he buys. Remember that the reason the Big East doesn't have its own network is that it's under contract with ESPN right now.
-- Not sure if USF is a possibility, but you guys will start asking, so I'll mention that the Times' Antonya English reports that Florida's 6-foot-10 power forward/center Kenny Kadji is transferring after two seasons with the Gators. He's recovering from back surgery, so sitting out the transfer year might not be a bad thing. He logically would have two years of eligibility after sitting out the upcoming season, and I suppose if he could show that the back would have kept him from playing this upcoming season, he'd have a case for a sixth year down the road. Kadji was a huge recruit out of high school in Bradenton, and USF has a pressing need for post help after this season, so could be a match.
-- Good read on former USF linebacker Kion Wilson from SDboltsreport.com.
-- You guys are probably aware that Aug. 14 is USF night at Tropicana Field, and this Creative Loafing blogger mentions that the Lee Roy Selmon's is having a special with an hourlong buffet, transportation from north Tampa to the Trop and back, and a ticket/USF hat for $75.
