Murray excited to face cousin in Gators game

There's a good chance on Saturday that if USF running back Demetris Murray tries to run between the tackles, there will be a family reunion somewhere around the line of scrimmage, as he could easily wind up facing his first cousin, Gators defensive tackle Omar Hunter.

"We lived together," Murray said of Hunter -- those two, along with Florida fullback T.J. Pridemore, helped Buford (Ga.) High to a state championship and undefeated season in 2007. "It'll be pretty cool. (Hunter) called me twice, but we haven't talked to much. He called me and I was walking into a meeting, so I didn't get to talk to him."

Murray went to a Florida-LSU game in Gainesville during a Bulls bye week in 2008 with his family to see Hunter, and he said his relatives shouldn't be torn as far as which side to root for on Saturday. "My dad, he got my four tickets, so I guess he's going for me," Murray said.

Murray rushed for 46 yards in Saturday's opener, but he also caught three passes for 57 yards -- that's more receiving yards in one game than any of USF's running backs finished with in all of last season. He said he and senior Mo Plancher have put special emphasis in practice on their pass-catching, knowing it would be a bigger part of USF's offense.

"Every day, we catch at least 50, 75 balls before practice, me and Mo, with Coach Fitch, to work on our hands and help us out," he said. "Easily 50 a day."

Murray said his 25-yard touchdown and other screen passes wouldn't have been possible without strong downfield blocking from his offensive line, far from the line of scrimmage.

"Those guys did a heck of a job for me. That play wouldn't work at all if they didn't do what they did first up front," Murray said.
