Nebraska's Ekeler 'not involved' in USF job
USF's search for two defensive assistants continues, but Nebraska linebackers coach Mike Ekeler will not be part of Jim Leavitt's coaching staff.
"I am not involved w the S Florida job," Ekeler said via text message on Monday night.
Ekeler, who played linebacker under Leavitt from 1991-94, interviewed for the defensive coordinator job with Leavitt nine days ago, but opted to stay at Nebraska, saying the job wasn't a fit for both sides.
The Bulls are now less than a week away from the start of spring practice, and still seeking replacements for defensive coordinator Wally Burnham, who took the same job at Iowa State, and defensive backs coach Troy Douglas, who took the same job at North Carolina.
At least three BCS assistants have turned down offers to join Leavitt's staff: Illinois co-defensive coordinator Dan Disch, Colorado secondary coach Greg Brown and Georgia linebackers coach Jon Jancek. Ekeler and former Cincinnati defensive coordinator Joe Tresey have also interviewed with Leavitt.
