New radio crews announced for USF hoops
I probably use "hoops" too much as an easy shortening of basketball for headlines. It's a crutch, but it's one I use in normal conversation. "Hey, Greg, what do you have tonight?" "Ah, women's hoops." As opposed to those headline-only words, like "inked" and "cagers" and jargon like that. But I digress.
USF announced its new basketball radio teams for basketball season -- I know it's still another seven hours or so before the season actually starts -- with Jim Lighthall sliding over one chair to take over for T.J. Rives as the new play-by-play man, with veteran broadcaster Todd Kalas joining the team as an analyst. Former USF player Anddrikk Frazier will also be part of the men's and women's radio teams. The men's games will still be on WHNZ 1250 AM, with occasional games on 620 or 970 when there are scheduling conflicts. Stan Heath will have a one-hour weekly call-in radio show on WHNZ 1250, with the night varying from week to week but the time constant at 7 p.m.
There's a new play-by-play voice on the women's side as well -- Garrett Walvoord takes over, with Amanda Miller returning on color commentary. The women's games will be on WQYK 1010 AM.
-- One quick note: Junior guard Shantia Grace, the top returning scorer for Jose Fernandez's women's basketball team, was held out of practice Thursday with a sore calf. Fernandez said he still expects Grace to be able to return to practice healthy in time for her to play in Tuesday's opener against Bethune-Cookman -- the Bulls will certainly need her two nights later against Duke.
