New week, new bowl projections for USF
How does Saturday's loss to Pittsburgh hurt the bowl projections for USF football? Not too badly, apparently. Gone is the pie-in-the-sky Fiesta Bowl projection from CBSsports.com from last week, but I can't figure out why none of the pundits are pairing USF with a return to the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl in St. Petersburg.
The traveler in me certainly isn't pulling for that -- I'll cover the St. Pete game no matter what, so it definitely simplifies my holiday season. It just seems that even if USF wins its remaining two games, they won't be a logical pick for the top three Big East games -- BCS, Champs, Meineke -- and of the remaining games, I don't know they wouldn't be paired across the bay to optimize that bowl and allow more fans to see the Bulls in a bowl. No, it's not an exciting finish to the season, but it makes the most sense.
But when I check the national sites for bowl projections, they have the Bulls everywhere but St. Petersburg. SI.com's Stewart Mandel has them in Memphis against Georgia, which would be a great draw for USF. ESPN.com's Mark Schlabach and Andrea Adelson also shun the Trop, with Schlabach putting them in Birmingham vs. Kentucky and Adelson putting them in Charlotte against Clemson. CBSsports.com agrees with Schlabach's pick.
So four pundit picks and all of them are against BCS opponents -- a plum postseason for a seven- or (possibly) eight-win USF team, for sure ...
