NFL preseason: Bulls on the bubble

Another quiet weekend for former Bulls trying to earn spots on NFL rosters -- the league requires teams to cut from 80 players to 75 today, then the big cut down to the regular-season limit of 53 players on Saturday after Thursday's final games. Wouldn't surprise me if a USF player or two were cut loose today -- here's a full rundown of all 14 players, starting with established players then onto the bubble guys:

-- Mike Jenkins, CB, Cowboys: Started against Texans, made three tackles with one pass defensed.

-- Stephen Nicholas, LB, Falcons: Started at OLB vs. Dolphins, had three tackles, all in the fourth quarter.

-- Kawika Mitchell, LB, Bills: Came off bench vs. Bengals, with three tackles.

-- Tyrone McKenzie, LB, Patriots: Two tackles off the bench vs. Rams, both in fourth quarter.

-- Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, Giants: First-rounder was held out with a groin injury. Here's a recent pic from Star-Ledger.

-- Nate Allen, S, Eagles: Started at free safety, had four tackles and a QB hurry, plus got a look on kickoff returns, with a 15-yard return.

-- Jerome Murphy, CB, Rams: Played vs. Patriots but did not log any statistics.

-- George Selvie, DE, Rams: Missed second game in a row with leg injury.

-- Carlton Mitchell, WR, Browns: Made a nice splash play with 26-yard reverse (in highlights here about 2 minutes in). Also caught one pass for 5 yards.

Now the bubble guys ...

-- Taurus Johnson, WR, Browns: Made one catch for 16 yards, but still faces long odds as player added off waivers during camp.

-- Kion Wilson, LB, Chargers: Played but did not log any stats vs. Saints. Might need strong game in preseason finale to stick.

-- Marc Dile, OL, Bucs: Played with second offensive line vs. Jaguars. Battling for final o-line spots on roster.

-- Trae Williams, CB, Bucs: Played but did not log any statistics. Again, tough odds as late addition to camp roster.

-- Chad Simpson, RB, Bills: Three carries for 18 yards, and converted a 4th-and-1. Was down after helmet-to-helmet collision, but said to be OK. His top competition, rookie Joique Bell, only had 10 yards on six carries.
