One day away: USF-FSU links to share ...
Already seeing USF flags flying on cars around town, and the morning announcements at my son's elementary school closed with a "Go Bulls" this morning. I'm headed up to Tallahassee this afternoon, so hope everyone has a safe day on the roads. Here's some links, perhaps for a little conversation to help the four hours go a little faster on the way up ...
-- One more family connection between the two schools. Brothers LaDre and Ventoure Watkins, both Wharton graduates, are walk-ons for the Bulls and Seminoles, respectively. LaDre, a linebacker, is still recovering from knee surgery last fall and might not make the trip, but Ventoure (the e is silent, so it's ven-TOUR) is excited about the possible reunion.
"I'm the older one, but he's bigger," said Ventoure, a 6-foot-2, 165-pound sophomore receiver who has played on the kick and punt block units for FSU.
Ventoure was more of a track star in high school and said he had scholarship offers from Buffalo, Vanderbilt and Michigan, but chose to walk on at FSU to be closer to home. USF has a strong Wharton presence, and Ventoure said he knows tight end Andreas Shields and walk-ons Joel Miller and Rony Delisca well. Miller, Shields and the Watkins brothers would hang out after Wharton games on Friday nights, so it'll be a reunion of sorts whether LaDre is able to suit up or not.
-- FSU tight end Caz Piurowski, from Land O'Lakes, says USF-FSU feels like "a miniature rivalry," according to the Tallahassee Democrat. "You hate to give them credibility," Bobby Bowden says.
-- Jeremiah Warren's hometown paper, the Panama City News-Herald, has a feature on USF's left tackle and the difficult path he had to getting on the football field with the Bulls.
-- The Orlando Sentinel has a "Getting to Know USF" capsule, complete with a haiku, though they mistakenly give Eric Schwartz credit for Delbert Alvarado's missed field goals. The Sentinel also has a feature on USF quarterback B.J. Daniels going back to his hometown of Tallahassee.
-- One blogger's open letter to USF fans. "You are young and naive. I understand," he writes.
-- The Lakeland Ledger's Tom Zebold does a Q&A with an FSU blog. Good insights there.
