Preseason done, ex-Bulls await final NFL cuts
Time for one last roundup of former Bulls in NFL camps, with the preseason finishing Thursday night and all NFL teams making the big cut from 75 to 53 players by Saturday. That could claim a handful of USF alums -- receiver Taurus Johnson, cut by the Browns this past week, is hopeful of landing on an NFL practice squad next week. One more transaction -- former USF defensive end Jarriett Buie was among the cuts announced Friday by the UFL's Florida Tuskers, who still have Matt Grothe, J.R. Reed and Huey Whittaker in camp. Onto the NFL guys ...
First, three USF alums -- Cowboys cornerback Mike Jenkins, Bills linebacker Kawika Mitchell and Eagles safety Nate Allen -- got Thursday night off and didn't play, as many NFL teams hold their starters and key veterans out from the final preseason game. Here's the rest, starting with those most likely to stick around for the regular season:
Stephen Nicholas, LB, Falcons: Playing in his hometown of Jacksonville, Nicholas had two tackles including one for a loss while coming off the bench against the Jaguars.
Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, Giants: Rookie first-rounder had three tackles, including one for a loss, against the Patriots.
Jerome Murphy, CB, Rams: Rookie third-rounder had two tackles vs. the Ravens.
Tyrone McKenzie, LB, Patriots: Had a big game with 10 total tackles (nine in 2nd half) vs. (fixed!) Giants.
Carlton Mitchell, WR, Browns: Got to start against Bears, with two catches for 22 yards, including a 10-yarder on third-and-6. Flagged for an offensive pass interference penalty and also gained 1 yard on an end around. Should make the Browns' roster.
George Selvie, DE, Rams: After missing last two games with leg injury, Selvie played, with one tackle and one pass defensed vs. Ravens. Would be surprised if he doesn't make the cut.
Marc Dile, OL, Bucs: Got to start against Texans and has made a good case to stick as a backup lineman.
Kion Wilson, LB, Chargers: Undrafted rookie made most of the fourth quarter of preseason finale, with five tackles, forced fumble, tackle for loss and pass defensed. Seems more likely to stick on practice squad, but hard to rule anything out.
Trae Williams, CB, Bucs: Had two tackles off the bench for Bucs vs. Texans, but as a late arrival to camp, needed to make a big splash.
Chad Simpson, RB, Bills: Battling for a roster spot, Simpson had a lackluster 16 yards on eight carries, with one catch for 9 yards against the Lions.
