QB Grothe's football future still up in the air

26

April

Two days after he was passed over in the NFL draft, former USF quarterback Matt Grothe is still exploring his best options to begin his pro football career, according to his agent, John Phillips.

Phillips said Grothe has an invitation to an NFL rookie minicamp -- not a free-agent contract, but the right to earn a deal while working out with a group of other undrafted rookies. The Canadian Football League remains a possibility for Grothe, though the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, who had worked him out last month, no longer have his negotiation rights. Phillips said another unnamed CFL team immediately picked up Grothe's rights and is now negotiating to bring him into camp this summer.

Phillips wouldn't say which CFL team had Grothe's rights, but three of the league's eight teams -- Calgary, Saskatchewan and Edmonton -- have only three quarterbacks on roster, while the rest have four or five.

Grothe has worked hard in the last six months to recover from the season-ending knee injury he suffered in September. He was able to run all drills in his workouts with pro teams last month, and worked out with the Bucs, who have since signed former Mississippi quarterback Jevan Snead as an undrafted rookie.

Five Bulls players were drafted over the weekend, and two more -- linebacker Kion Wilson and kicker Delbert Alvarado -- signed free-agent contract. Grothe looks to be in the same position as receiver Jessie Hester, who will participate in the Lions' rookie minicamp Thursday, hoping to land a free-agent contract.

-- Good to see that Carlton Mitchell is back on Twitter -- follow him at twitter.com/CLMitch10 -- and I'm impressed to see that two days after the Browns drafted him, the receiver already has a link to the Cleveland Boys & Girls Club on his official site, carltonmitchell.net.
