QB update: Grothe still battling, Gregory injured

21

August

Monday's morning practice brought another update to USF's quarterback competition, with third-stringer Grant Gregory's left arm in a sling after he separated his non-throwing shoulder in Saturday's scrimmage.

"(He's out) as long as he says he'll be out. He's a battler," Leavitt said. "If he says he can't practice, he can't practice. I don't even worry about him. Knowing Grant, he doesn't want to be out long."

Leavitt said that while redshirt freshman Matt Grothe had an "outstanding" day Saturday, that does not mean he has moved ahead of senior Pat Julmiste.

"I never said Matt Grothe was in the lead over Pat Julmiste," Leavitt said. "What I did say was Matt Grothe had an outstanding day. I said Grant had a really good day. They're all three battling."

Julmiste missed most of Saturday's scrimmage with back spasms, but Leavitt said he practiced normally on Monday morning. Gregory shoulder -- he also hurt his thumb and needed stitches for a cut above his nose -- shouldn't keep him from playing in the season opener against McNeese State, but will limit him in the next week or so.

One more thing: The latest Sporting News has its college football preview, with both high praise and a few real barbs for the Bulls. The magazine has the Bulls fourth in the conference -- can't recall another national publication picking them higher -- and gives USF's the league's best linebackers and cornerbacks. Less flattering? In ranking the league's coaches, the Bulls are tabbed seventh out of eight schools, with only Syracuse below them. As if that didn't hit hard enough, they have a feature with a bunch of "observations," supposedly given by unnamed Big East coaches. Here's what they say about Leavitt:

"Their coach (Jim Leavitt) is a different duck. He runs sprints with the players in pregame and won't shake your hand and won't talk to you. He has this whole "we're gonna kick your ass" thing going. He's freaking crazy. . . . "
