Rain-delay fun: More USF notes and links ...

Heavy rains have me in a weather delay here at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, which might wind up being a Monday race, which could knock me out of covering football practice on Monday afternoon.

I think my last rain delay might be from the Big East baseball tournament, and I imagine no drivers have gathered for an impromptu dance off, as USF and Connecticut did last spring.

It gives me a few minutes, though, to pass along some USF links -- good reading, even if you're not stuck inside a media center waiting for an announcement that you get to drive across the bridge for a fifth consecutive day.

-- Still not sure if it has any impact on his eligibility, but USF's Mike Ford apparently played Saturday night for the Bradenton Gladiators in a 62-0 win against the St. Pete Sharks. Still no word on Ford's plans after USF.

-- I don't normally do this, but the Tribune's Eddie Daniels had a very good feature on former USF receiver Johnny Peyton, who returned to football last fall at York University in Canada.

-- Speaking of erstwhile Bulls from their Conference USA days, the Bradenton Herald's Alan Dell has a good story on C.J. Hunnicutt, who is resurrecting his college career at an NAIA school after spending six months in jail after a drug arrest.

-- Softball continues to hover around .500, splitting a doubleheader Saturday with Cornell to move to 15-16 on the season. The second game was a 4-3 loss in 11 innings, spoiling a solid relief outing in which Brittany Bowles pitched six-plus innings of scoreless relief before losing on an unearned run.

-- Land O'Lakes High quarterback Stevie Weatherford, who has a scholarship offer from USF, was arrested Friday on felony charges of grand theft and burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, the Times' Izzy Gould reports.
