RBs Aycock, Scott show up bigger for camp
Running backs Darrell Scott and Dontae Aycock, who sat out last season after transferring to USF from Colorado and Auburn, made some of the team's biggest weight gains in the offseason, based on weights listed on the Bulls' spring and fall rosters.
Aycock, who was listed at 224 pounds this spring, is up 29 pounds to 253 on the roster released to the media Wednesday night, and Scott, who was listed at 230, is up 16 pounds to 246, though Skip Holtz has been consistent in praising Scott for his work ethic and commitment since joining the team last fall. Another big gainer is true freshman Tye Turner, who was listed at 245 pounds on signing day in February but is now listed at 266.
USF has its first fall practice at 3:40 p.m. this afternoon so we'll be able to ask Holtz about the players, but there were other curious changes in comparing the spring and fall rosters:
-- Ten returning players are shorter than they were listed on the spring roster, most notably quarterback B.J. Daniels, who is now listed at 6-foot after being 6-1 in the spring. Twice in the past year, USF has listed Daniels at 5-foot-11, only to "correct" his height to 6-1. Among the other players to lose an inch are linebacker DeDe Lattimore (6-1) and receiver Sterling Griffin (6-0). And defensive end Patrick Hampton, who went from 6-3 to 6-0 on last fall's roster, has bounced back nicely and is now listed at 6-foot-2. Other healthy gains: RB Demetris Murray went from 5-10 to 6 feet, and walk-on defensive back Patrice Pierre gained two inches over the summer to 6-2.
-- It's understandable that signees' measurements will change between signing day and the start of camp -- another five signees are an inch shorter than they were listed in February. Safety Chris "C.J." Garye is actually two inches taller, now listed at 6-3, and offensive linemen Darrell Williams and Thor Jozwiak are an inch taller than their February heights. Linebacker Zack Bullock, who was skinny at 206 in February, has dropped 12 pounds and is now listed at 194 entering fall drills.
-- Linebacker Reshard Cliett, who is adding weight as he shifts from safety to linebacker, actually took a step back, dropping two pounds from his spring weight to 208 pounds on the fall roster. And Daniels, despite being an inch shorter, has added nine pounds to his frame, listed at 223. Linebacker Sam Barrington went the opposite direction, slimming down and dropping nine pounds to 226.
