Receiver Erskin will go to camp with Bulls

Receiver Colby Erskin, who has been granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA, will rejoin the Bulls this fall even though he has not been assured of a scholarship, his father Kevin said Friday.

Erskin, who has recovered from a third torn ACL suffered last fall, was on scholarship with the Bulls the past three seasons after starting his Bulls career as a walk-on. As a graduate, he is eligible to transfer and play immediately at another school, but his father said the Seminole grad hopes to show coach Skip Holtz in preseason camp that he is healthy and worthy of a scholarship.

"Colby wants to play here, as he obviously has roots here, so he is going to camp with the Bulls," his father wrote via e-mail. "Best case, in just a few days of seeing Colby run around catching balls, he will have a scholarship."

Erskin's career has been limited by injuries -- he caught five passes for 73 yards as a redshirt freshman in 2006, then two passes for 13 yards last season before his knee injury. If healthy, he could help the Bulls at a key position, as USF lost junior Carlton Mitchell to the NFL draft, and potential starters A.J. Love and Sterling Griffin will miss the start of the season recovering from serious offseason injuries.
