Reds like Bulls: Cincy drafts USF junior Fontanez
USF junior right-hander Randy Fontanez is the third Bulls player drafted by the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday, selected in the 23rd round.
Fontanez, who led the Big East with 105 strikeouts and earned second-team All-Big East honors despite a 5-7 record, joins outfielder Stephen Hunt and signee Kyle Waldrop, who were drafted by Cincinnati in the 15th and 12th rounds, respectively.
So as USF looks to 2011, the Reds are a huge factor in how much talent the Bulls will have entering the season -- they could take away a top pitcher, top batter and top recruit, or could come away empty and leave the Bulls with key players returning.
USF has now had three players and three signees drafted -- signees Waldrop and Kyle Ryan in the 12th round, juniors Hunt and Andrew Barbosa in the 15th round, with signee Ozney Guillen going to the White Sox in the 22nd round.
