Report: CBS TV exec to be Big East commissioner

14

August

The Big East could announce its new commissioner as early as this afternoon, and former Boston Globe writer Mark Blaudschun is reporting that the conference's new leader will be Mike Aresco, executive vice president for programming at CBS Sports.

Aresco has worked for CBS since 1996 and has worked with the kind of major TV contracts the Big East is in position to negotiate this fall -- he worked on CBS' basketball contract for the NCAA Tournament and the network's recent deal to broadcast SEC football. The conference opens a 60-day window to exclusively negotiate a deal with ESPN on Sept. 1, but could see aggressive bidding from rivals like NBC and Fox.

Here's a link to Aresco's CBS bio page -- we'll update as soon as there is any confirmation or news of an announcement. Other potential hires had been floated by various outlets in the last 24 hours, including UNLV athletic director Jim Livengood, who is close friends with USF's Doug Woolard. Woolard was an associate athletic director under Livengood at Washington State from 1989-94. Other names ranging from ESPN's Jay Bilas to Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick have been mentioned; Swarbrick quickly denied being a candidate Monday night.
