Report: Temple to join Big East in 2012

The Big East's football opening this fall may have been solved, as Temple is likely joining the league as an all-sports member beginning with the 2012 football season, CBSsports.com reported Wednesday.

The conference is down to seven football teams with West Virginia's exit to the Big 12, and Temple's arrival would mean that Boise State, the headliner of the league's new additions, cannot join the league until 2013 as originally scheduled. Temple would be a solid addition in basketball and has seen recent success in football, with at least eight wins in each of the last three seasons. Temple football struggled in the Big East, going 0-25 in conference in the league's first four seasons and finishing 14-80 in Big East games before leaving after the 2004 season.

The Big East would now have 13 football members in 2015 when Navy joins, though CBS' report said the league is going beyond its desired target of 12 teams to guard against losing another school, such as Louisville to the Big 12.

If you accept that Temple would inherit West Virginia's conference schedule, USF would play a game in Philadelphia this fall.
