Ribs aplenty: Your Birmingham guide

20

December

Had some fun in today's paper, getting basketball coach Robert McCullum, a Birmingham native, to give us his personal tour of the city and his memories from almost three decades living there. For Bulls fans headed to Alabama, he's got some restaurants to recommend, as well as a strong suggestion to visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, as USF's football team will Thursday.

I also had the chance Tuesday to talk with junior cornerback Mike Jenkins, who is pondering leaving after this season for the NFL draft. Jenkins, much like running back Andre Hall and linebacker Stephen Nicholas, appears to be taking the careful, cautious approach to leaving early, and he told me he'd likely return to school for his senior year if the league's advisory board for underclassmen tells him he's unlikely to be drafted on the first day of the draft (first three rounds). If he's a first-day pick, he'll likely give the draft a try.

One more Where Are They Now link -- USF hoops fans surely remember Brian Lamb, who's finding success outside the world of sports. According to today's Tallahassee Democrat, he's been named to a high post at Fifth Third Bank (which is the title sponsor of Cincinnati's basketball arena), responsible for 28 branches in the Tampa Bay area. Not bad for 30 years old ...

And Times writer Joe Smith talked Tuesday with St. Petersburg's Aaron Holmes, a talented guard/forward who is transferring from FSU after just one semester. A lot of things point to Holmes being a match at USF, and he told Smith that he has requested a release to three schools: USF, Central Florida and Illinois. Given that his initial reason for leaving the Seminoles was a family issue, it's hard to imagine him going so much farther from home with the Illini, which leaves UCF and USF, and there's only so much allure to playing in Conference USA these days. He'll make a decision in the next two weeks ...
