Sam at Sam: Barrington to start at SLB in opener

TAMPA -- One of the bigger remaining questions in USF's starting lineup got an answer Wednesday, as junior Sam Barrington, the Bulls' starting middle linebacker last season, said he expects to start at strongside linebacker in USF's opener at Notre Dame on Sept. 3.

With Barrington on the outside, the Bulls will start junior Mike Lanaris in the middle. Defensive coordinator Mark Snyder had considered starting Barrington in the middle and bringing in a new starter at strongside, either senior Curtis Weatherspoon or redshirt freshman Reshard Cliett.

The move puts USF's three most experienced linebackers on the field, though Snyder is likely to rotate in his next three at the position as well, including junior Mike Jeune, who joined the Bulls in January.

JENKINS AT CORNER: Two days after Snyder said sophomore safety JaQuez Jenkins was a starter in USF's nickel defense, Jenkins had a new role, getting work at cornerback as the Bulls deal with depth issues due to lingering injuries there.

Jenkins said he's comfortable at corner but still considers himself a safety -- if injured players like junior George Baker and redshirt freshman Spencer Boyd get healthy, Jenkins could stay exclusively at safety.
