Scout-team Bulls seek to show Gators' speed

8

September

Watching first half-hour of practice Wednesday, it's impressive to see the number of recognizable players the Bulls have working on their scout team this week, trying to simulate the talented Gators skill-position players they'll face Saturday in Gainesville.

In many cases, there are two players wearing the numbers of key Gators players -- the Bulls have suspended receiver Victor Marc and Notre Dame transfer Spencer Boyd both working as back-turned-receiver Chris Rainey this week, with running back Dontae Aycock and walk-on running back Rodney Watson wearing No. 2 to simulate speedy running back Jeff Demps.

Walk-on quarterback Ryan Eppes is playing the role of Gators passer John Brantley, and the Bulls are going so far as to have freshman quarterback Jamius Gunsby simulate backup quarterback Trey Burton, who saw limited action Saturday against Miami (Ohio) in special packages. Freshman receiver Deonte Welch is wearing No. 9 to simulate receiver Carl Moore, and walk-on J.J. Peterson is wearing No. 6 with a similar frame to Gators receiver Deonte Thompson.

Much like the way the Bulls can't simulate the noise generated by 90,000 fans, Skip Holtz talked Tuesday about how his starters -- let alone scout-teamers -- would be hard-pressed to simulate the speed the Bulls will face in Gainesville. We'll have more after practice, but it looks like the Bulls are doing everything they can to give their starters a sense of what they'll be up against. ...
