Semi tough: Moffitt, Selvie make award cuts

Linebacker Ben Moffitt and defensive end George Selvie had made the semifinal cuts for the Butkus and Lombardi awards, given to the nation's top linebacker and top lineman, respectively.

Moffitt is one of 10 Butkus semifinalists, the only Big East player on the list and the only player from a Florida school. Selvie wasn't even on the Lombardi watch list until two weeks ago, but made the cut to 12 semifinalists. An early nomination for Understatement of the Year comes from the Lombardi announcement, which says: "Selvie had 5.5 sacks as a freshman last season and has already surpassed that number in 2007."

If USF keeps winning and playing well on defense, it's not unreasonable to think Moffitt and Selvie could be one of three finalists when the next cuts come next month; until Ohio State loses, it'll be tough to beat James Laurinaitis for the Butkus, and LSU's Glenn Dorsey is still probably the guy to beat for Lombardi.
