Sentinel: UCF could play USF before joining Big East

How's this for USF warming up to UCF as a future conference rival: The Orlando Sentinel reports that Bulls athletic director Doug Woolard and UCF President John Hitt spoke in Tallahassee on Thursday, and while the Knights might not join the Big East until 2013, there's a chance the two schools could meet next season.

USF might have an opening on the schedule if the Big East plays only seven conference games, and according to Hitt, Woolard mentioned the possibility of USF and UCF playing if the Bulls do in fact need a 12th game to complete their 2012 schedule.

"He was very cordial and even said, `Look, we may have a vacancy on our schedule next year. Maybe we could start that series next year,'" Hitt told the Sentinel of his conversation with Woolard. "Wouldn't that be great? And for Doug to step forward with that I thought was really neat."

UCF is expected to soon formally announce they've accepted an invitation to join the Bulls in the Big East, though it's still unknown how quickly the new Big East lineup can come together. Hitt and Woolard were in Tallahassee on Thursday to attend a State Senate Committee on Higher Education meeting dealing with issues in college athletics.
