Short stay: WR Amarri Jackson cut by Bucs

For the second year in a row, former USF receiver Amarri Jackson has earned a spot on the Bucs roster, only to be cut in June before preseason camp starts.

Jackson was among three players cut Friday as the Bucs finished a mandatory minicamp and signed rookie receiver Sammie Stroughter to a contract. Jackson signed with the Bucs as an undrafted free agent last year but was also cut in May. Two undrafted rookies from USF, defensive end Jarriett Buie and tackle Marc Dile, remain on the Bucs roster, trying to beat long odds to stick with the team.

-- Defensive tackle Khyri Thornton, who signed with USF in February but said last week he was not admitted to school by an academic committee that evaluates incoming athletes, said Friday he has signed with Southern Miss and will be in Hattiesburg this fall.

Thornton, from Panama City, about five hours from Southern Miss, took a campus visit there this past weekend. He said he has been cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse and expects to have better luck getting into Southern Miss.
