Shot at the pros: Five Bulls get NFL tryouts

One USF football player was drafted Sunday with three more landing free-agent contracts, and now five more Bulls have earned chances at NFL contracts by being invited to rookie minicamps in the next two weekends.

Three Bulls seniors -- tackle Marc Dile, tight end Cedric Hill and defensive end Jarriett Buie -- will participate in the Bucs' rookie minicamp, which typically includes about 20 tryout players competing for a handful of contracts while working out with the team's draft picks and signed rookie free agents.

Safety Louis Gachette, who had a career-best 37 tackles as a senior, has accepted an invitation to the Dolphins' rookie minicamp this weekend, and former Bulls defensive tackle Richard Clebert, who last played for USF in 2007, has earned a spot at the Saints rookie minicamp, which starts a week from Thursday.

Add those five to linebacker Tyrone McKenzie, drafted by the Patriots, receiver Taurus Johnson, who signed with the Chiefs, and offensive guards Matt Huners and Ryan Schmidt, who signed free-agent deals with the 49ers and Titans, respectively. Still could be a few more USF players getting minicamp invitations in the next day or so ..

-- Men's basketball update: Freshman guard Gaby Belardo, granted his release last month, has decided to transfer to Canisius after visiting the campus this past weekend. "I think it's a great opportunity for me to play there," said Belardo, who scored 13 points as a freshman. He'll sit out the upcoming season, with three years of eligibility remaining with the Griffins, who went 11-20 in 2008-09.

-- More reaction from Missouri to USF coach Stan Heath landing junior college center Jarrid Famous -- it's not quite "flabbergasted," but this Kansas City Star blogger said the decision "baffles" him.

-- We've added a static Twitter link on the right side, just under my ugly mug. Again, it's free, it's wildly popular and occasionally, you get USF news a few minutes before it shows up on the blog. Keep those @replies and questions coming ...
