Showcases, camps ahead for USF football
USF football coach Skip Holtz has two big summer events coming up that will bring in many of the state's top recruits -- this weekend starts the annual Sling 'n' Shoot 7-on-7 tournament on USF's campus, and the program's "SuperBull" one-day camp is later this month at Raymond James Stadium.
The two events could help the Bulls' recruiting efforts for 2011 pick up speed -- right now, Holtz has taken two commitments, from Punta Gorda Charlotte receiver Alex Mut and Pahokee safety Rontavious Atkins. The "SuperBull" event is expected to draw between 100 and 120 student-athletes.
The Sling 'n' Shoot will be held in two different sessions, with a second tournament held July 24-25. The program's "Big Man Challenge" camp for linemen will be held the same two weekends as well.
USF will also have a Junior Bulls Camp from Sunday to Tuesday for students entering grades 1 through 8, offering instruction in the basic fundamentals of football. The camp is $100 per student in advance, with a $50 deposit due today -- I apologize for the late notice. Registration on Sunday is $120. For more information on Holtz's football camps, check out USF's official site.
-- As we've reported here earlier, the UFL's Florida Tuskers announced on Tuesday the signing of former USF safety J.R. Reed and defensive end Jarriett Buie. Reed had returned to USF last fall as a graduate assistant on Jim Leavitt's staff, and remained in that capacity with Holtz this spring, working with USF's defensive backs. The Tuskers signed former USF quarterback Matt Grothe on Friday.
