Signing Day Central: Robinson's Gonzalez ready to "chase" BCS titles with Bulls
Joe Smith here filling in for Greg Auman, giving you up to date news and reaction from USF signing day. Will be posting updates from press conferences throughout the day, so stay tuned.
It didn't take long for Robinson High senior receiver Ruben Gonzalez to ditch his black suit, and show off his true colors - USF Bulls colors.
Gonzalez, who signed with USF during a press conference at his school Wednesday afternoon, announced his commitment with a "Go Bulls!" and then unveiled his Bulls t-shirt and shorts underneath the suit. He even had a USF key lanyard.
"I'm very excited, I couldn't even sleep last night," Gonzalez said. "I told coach Smith and Coach Holtz I'm going to represent to the fullest, and that's what I did... Coach Holtz and the Holtz era, we're going to do big things, BCS championships, that's what we're going to do."
Gonzalez was one of several receivers in the USF's class, as WR Alex Mut and Jefferson High WR Andre Davis among the others. But Robinson coach Mike DePue said Gonzalez is a very versatile receiver.
"Not only is he a fierce competitor, he'll go across the middle," DePue said. "He blocks and that's what you got. If you ask any college coach what he'd rather do the vast majority of them say they want to run the football and Ruben is a big, 6-foot-2 kid who is going to put on 15-20 pounds and he's going to manhandle people once he gets that physicality, and that's what he's going to bring to that next level. And he's got that mental toughness."
*There have been a number of the USF commitments to file their letters of intent: LB Edsel Caprice, DB Kenneth Durden, Gonzalez and OL Max Lang, OL Darrell Williams.
