Softball, baseball opens busy day with wins



A busy Saturday for USF opened with Bulls softball needing extra innings to get past Connecticut, prevailing 6-2 in eight innings to stay perfect in Big East play.

The Bulls (39-5, 12-0) scored four in the eighth, loading the bases on an error and two walks. Janine Richardson brought in the go-ahead run with a single, and Jessica Mouse got two RBIs by reaching on another error. USF's Sara Nevins totaled 6.1 innings, giving up two runs in the fifth after the Huskies struck for three straight singles with two outs.

USF baseball got a 3-run home run from Todd Brazeal and pulled out a 6-5 win at Pittsburgh -- starter Joey Lovecchio improved to 7-0 on the season and the Bulls are now 24-12 and 9-2 in the Big Easta. Softball closes out a doubleheader this afternoon before both teams close out those series on Sunday. USF has its "Green and Gold Bowl" football scrimmage at Corbett Soccer Stadium tonight at 6.
