Softball now Big East No. 4 seed, baseball in 5th
USF softball will have the No. 4 seed in this week's Big East tournament at Notre Dame after dropping two of three games at Syracuse this weekend, including a no-hitter from the Orange in Sunday's regular-season finale. Baseball, meanwhile, dropped two of three at first-place St. John's and dropped to fifth in the Big East standings with two weeks remaining in its regular season.
USF softball (45-10, 17-5 in Big East) has a tough draw in South Bend, with fifth-seeded DePaul (34-19, 14-8) at 10 a.m. Thursday, setting up a potential semifinal showdown Friday with top-seeded Louisville, which swept a doubleheader from the Bulls. USF and DePaul did not meet in the regular season; the Bulls are already assured of a spot in the NCAA regionals, their first since 2008.
USF baseball (30-18, 13-8) is in fifth place but just one game out of second, with the Bulls' final home series this weekend against Connecticut (26-21, 14-7). The Bulls got a win Friday night on a 2-hit shutout by Andrew Barbosa, but lost the next two games, including Sunday, when the Bulls rallied for two in the ninth to tie the Red Storm, only to lose in the bottom of the ninth.
