Softball pitcher Catalano out for '09 season

January

Capri Bad news for USF softball, as sophomore pitcher Capri Catalano, last year's Big East Freshman of the Year, will miss the upcoming season with an injury to her right (throwing )shoulder.

USF announced that Catalano will miss the season on Wednesday afternoon, with trainers saying she will undergo surgery this spring but should be able to return healthy for the 2010 season.

Catalano went 17-1 last season, earning second-team All-Big East honors and leading the team in strikeouts (177) and saves (six). Her injury comes at a position where USF has considerable depth, with seniors Cristi Ecks and Bree Spence returning from injuries and freshmen Candace Howell and Brittany Bowles expected to contribute, along with junior Kristen Gordon.

Wednesday's announcement surprised me a bit, if only because I was at Tuesday's practice and spoke with coach Ken Eriksen, who had this to say about his pitching staff, just 24 hours earlier: "You have very consistent starters in Bree Spence, Cristi Ecks, Catalano. You've got some potentially good starters in both Bowles, Candace Howell and Gordon. ... It'll be funny how things play out. I'm interested to see, but you've got three solid situations for starters right now."
