Spring football roster: First look

18

March

Only have time for a quick post, but wanted to give you guys news about USF's new spring football depth chart and roster -- I'll add the depth chart in full here tonight or tomorrow. We told you this week that sophomore cornerbacks Antonio and Antwane Cox were transferring to Bethune-Cookman, and there are three walk-ons who are no longer on roster: defensive linemen Bryan Hall and Treco Bellamy and defensive back Chris Ellick. Hall had missed significant time with some family concerns he left to deal with. Bellamy had played some at defensive end last year, and Ellick (whose brother Dwight played at Notre Dame) was a regular on special-teams coverage units. I don't have the names of the new walk-ons added to the roster, but should have those by Tuesday. (We'd reported here that linebacker Josh Soto was off the roster, but as of Monday morning, he's back on.)

A few wrinkles on the depth chart:

-- Redshirt freshman Aston Samuels has moved ahead of junior Ricky Ponton as the top backup to junior running back Ben Williams. Freshman Mike Ford, one of the players everyone will be watching this spring, isn't on the current two-deep, but that could change in the next month.

-- Samuels is one of seven redshirt freshmen (first-year players) who are listed as top backups at their positions. The rest? Receiver Carlton Mitchell, offensive linemen Jeremiah Warren, Zach Hermann and Jacob Sims, tight end Andrew Ketchel and defensive end Brandon Peguese.

-- I count only eight seniors listed as starters, and one of those is defensive end Jarriett Buie, who can get another year of eligibility by graduating by spring 2008. Only three on offense -- receiver Amarri Jackson, center Nick Capogna and tackle Walter Walker, with nose tackle Richard Clebert, linebacker Ben Moffitt and cornerbacks Trae Williams and Mike Jenkins as the other senior starters. Only four other seniors are listed as top backups (LT Jared Carnes, NT Allen Cray, DT Tavarious Robinson, LB Sam Miller).

-- I'll get another post up soon, just for silly details like the offseason weight gain/loss champs. Bonus points to any reader who can guess which four Bulls shrunk an inch from their last listed height. I'm not asking for 4-for-4s, just something to help get those crazy 20-comment posts basketball has been pulling down lately ...
