Squirrel? RB Shaw shines in final USF scrimmage

TAMPA -- USF junior running back Marcus Shaw has worked his way up the Bulls' depth chart with a solid preseason, and as Skip Holtz's team wrapped up camp with a closed scrimmage Friday, Shaw had three touchdowns to continue that strong impression.

Shaw, with a shifty 5-foot-9, 190-pound frame, has earned a nickname from USF's defenders in the last few weeks.

"That kid's amazing," defensive end Ryne Giddins said. "We call him 'Squirrel' because, if you notice, a squirrel has fast, quick movements, and that's exactly how he is on the field."

The moniker carries extra weight at USF, where the squirrels on campus are famously aggressive, Giddins said.

"They come after you," he said. "One time, (defensive tackle Todd Chandler) was telling me a story that a squirrel was laying in the middle of the sidewalk and it wasn't moving. He got so scared he walked around."

Holtz has had praise for Shaw, but he's still looking for more as he doles out opening-week carries between seniors Demetris Murray and Lindsey Lamar, Shaw and other backs.

"Marcus Shaw had a couple of running touchdowns, but I'd like to see him run a little bit more physical," Holtz said. "He ran well. He's good in space. I thought Lindsey Lamar did some really good things in space. Today, and again, with every rep, Demetris Murray continues to run physical."

HEALING WELL: Holtz said nearly all his injured players, including key defensive linemen Cory Grissom, Elkino Watson and Julius Forte, have been cleared to practice without limitations when the Bulls return to practice Monday in preparation for I-AA Chattanoga.

Holtz said he'll evaluate tape from Friday's scrimmage and release a new depth chart Monday, settling any lingering position battles for the opener and making decisions on which true freshmen will open the season with intentions of playing.
