Still searching: Another possible kicker at USF
USF football coach Jim Leavitt's search for a kickoff specialist has a new leg in the chase, as Diego Palacio, part of two state championships at Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna, said he could be joining the team as a walk-on as early as Thursday.
Palacio, 22, last kicked at Dean College, a junior college in Massachusetts, and he attended classes at Florida State this spring with thoughts of walking on with the Seminoles. Palacio said he went 61-for-61 on extra points his senior year at Chaminade-Madonna, on a team so dominant he kicked just one field goal all season.
Leavitt is seeking a kickoff specialist so senior Delbert Alvarado doesn't have to handle kickoffs in addition to punts and place-kicking on field goals and extra points. The team has a returning walk-on in Eric Schwartz, and added goalkeeper Renato Proia from USF's soccer team this week as another option. If Palacio makes the team, he would have two years of eligibility with the Bulls.
