Stultz, Gonzalez combine for shutout vs. Huskies

USF baseball continues to make the most of its final home series, as Derrick Stultz and Nick Gonzalez combined for a shutout as the Bulls beat Connecticut 3-0 on Saturday night to move into a second-place tie in the Big East standings.

USF (32-18, 15-8) got six scoreless innings from Stultz (8-1), then three innings of two-hit relief from Gonzalez, who earned his second save. The Bulls picked up all three runs in the fifth, with young players at the bottom of the lineup stepping up again -- freshman Zac Gilcrease had the team's only RBI, scored and had two hits from the No. 9 spot in the lineup, and six of USF's seven hits came from the bottom four in the order.

USF is now tied with Louisville for second in the Big East standings, though the tiebreaker would make the Bulls the No. 3 seed in the tournament. Saturday's win officially clinched a berth in the Big East tournament in Clearwater, an event the Bulls missed the cut for last season. USF plays its final home game Sunday afternoon at 1.
