Such tweet sorrow: Leavitt done with Twitter
Three days after his players were tweeting hours and even minutes before kickoff, USF coach Jim Leavitt said Tuesday that he's done posting on Twitter.com.
"It's probably something I really don't want," Leavitt said. "It just seems like something they probably shouldn't do. I'm not going to use Twitter anymore. ... If I'm going to ask my players not to probably do it during that time, I'm just going to stop. My twittering days are over. .. .That's it for me, and hopefully it is at certain times for other players. We'll see."
Leavitt had built a strong following on Twitter, with 1,373 followers as of Tuesday afternoon -- he had posted 280 updates to his page since starting in May.
Leavitt's decision came after three players and an assistant coach posted messages to their Twitter.com pages in the hours leading up to USF's season opener against Wofford. Punter Justin Brockhaus-Kann sent short tweets during the pregame meal and on the ride to Raymond James Stadium, and quarterback B.J. Daniels also tweeted on the ride to the game. Defensive line coach Kevin Patrick sent out a tweet late Saturday morning: "Game Day! Nothing like it. Swarm and Punish!"
The most flagrant tweeting perhaps came from receiver Carlton Mitchell, who tweeted twice less than an hour before kickoff. "Lil weather delay sittin n the locker room still... so ready man I need 2 get out there. I understand the man upstairs run the show tho," he tweeted 55 minutes before kickoff, with another short post 15 minutes before kickoff.
Leavitt said he didn't have a team policy about cellphone use on game days -- none of USF's players have a following of more than 70 or so people, and some players set their pages to "private," so the only people that read them must be approved by the player. Mitchell's page is private, but his tweet was "retweeted" by USF's official football page, which has more than 2,000 followers, which got him in trouble with his coach.
"I think I did it at more appropriate times," Leavitt said of his tweeting, joking about his last tweet, which came at 5:11 a.m. Sunday morning after staying up late reviewing video from Saturday's win.
This blog of course will continue to tweet with reckless abandon before, during and after USF football games, so we take this opportunity to remind you all you can follow it here at Twitter.com/gregauman.
There are about a dozen USF football players on Twitter -- I won't list them here because it only increases the likelihood of them getting shut down. Daniels' latest tweet is interesting, whether it has anything to do with tweeting or not.
"Romans 6:12-Do not let sin reign in your mortal body, so that you obey its desires.Don't let sin control you, let Jesus have it," he wrote.
-- Polls! USF, which had three votes in the preseason AP poll, is down to one last-place vote from Ryan Finley of the Arizona Daily Star. And though Leavitt dropped the Bulls off his ballot in the coaches' poll, USF actually picked up ground there with 12 vote-points -- the Bulls had three from coaches other than Leavitt last week, and 11 total.
