The beloved portable trailers, the nostalgiac embodiment of USF football's humble early days, are back on campus this week, popping up as the temporary homes for the Bulls' basketball, volleyball, ticketing and Sun Dome staff while the arena undergoes major renovations over the next six to eight months.

Several trailers have been set up on Sycamore Drive, immediately east of USF's new football practice facility, with another now parked on the north side of the Sun Dome. Basketball staff will be able to move into their new offices in the Muma Basketball Center on the south side of the arena when that new facility is completed in the next two months.

The good news for volleyball is that the Bulls should be able to play their home games this fall in the Corral, even while construction continues on the rest of the arena. USF coach Claire Lessinger said Thursday that the staff will vacate their offices for about 90 days -- the Corral is also being used for storage for the rest of the arena during that time -- but will be back in place in time for normal preseason preparations. Volleyball has about two weeks of spring practice remaining, but the only thing displaced during construction should be summer camps and open gyms, and Lessinger is working on finding an optimal site for those.

For now, USF's basketball offices are boxing up everything -- pictures coming off the walls, piles of trophies and plaques collected for storage, herds of office chairs gathered on the arena floor as personnel move out. Fortunately for them, they won't have to spend as much time in the trailers as the football program did. ...
