Sweater vest! Holtz channels his inner Tressel

5

October

So I see USF coach Skip Holtz sporting a sharp Under Armour sweater vest over a dress shirt and ask him if he's channeling his inner Jim Tressel, and he astutely points out that Tressel likes a tie under his, wherein Holtz, newly entrenched Floridian that he is, has no need for such formality.

Here, then, is the opening three minutes and change of Holtz's weekly news conference, first talking about USF's 31-3 win against Florida Atlantic. He mentions Owls coach Howard Schnellenberger, but does not render any judgment, positive or negative, on the red-white-and-blue suspenders he wore during Saturday's game.

But wait! We're not done with the Random Jim Tressel Reference portion of today's blog. Turns out USF defensive coordinator Mark Snyder was recruited by Syracuse coming out of high school in the early 1980s -- it was at Syracuse in 1982 that he first met then QBs coach Jim Tressel, who he would later coach under at Youngstown State and Ohio State. He even visited the Syracuse campus as a recruit, but said head coach Dick MacPherson lost him when he tried to put him on defense.

"Coach MacPherson told me I had to be a DB, and I go 'No,'" said Snyder, who would later set Marshall's school record for interceptions with 10 in 1987 ... as a defensive back.
