Swindled! Seth nabs 6-11 USF commitment
The fall signing period for basketball starts on Wednesday, but USF coach Stan Heath has lost one of his two commitments, as 6-foot-11 center Gene Swindle of Miami will sign with Virginia Tech and former USF coach Seth Greenberg after visiting the Hokies this weekend.
"He's going to Virginia Tech. He decided (Monday) night," Gulliver Prep coach Harry Gordon said. "He just liked the whole situation and wanted to play in the ACC."
Swindle had been Heath's first commitment, then re-opened his recruitment three weeks ago when Virginia Tech missed out on other recruits and invited him for a campus visit. Heath visited Swindle in Miami last week, trying to keep him as a USF commitment, but Gordon said Swindle simply preferred the Hokies, who will redshirt him his first year on campus.
Without Swindle, the Bulls are expected to sign one player this week, 6-foot-8 forward Eladio Espinosa of Norlina, N.C., currently playing for Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia. Heath has two more scholarships available for the spring signing period and is expected to target a center and point guard.
