Tackle Popek named to Outland watch list
The Watch List Watch List is now a bona fide list for USF, with senior tackle Mark Popek among a long list of players named to the preseason watch list for the Outland Trophy, given to the best interior lineman in college football.
I hear what you're saying, that a left tackle doesn't seem like an interior lineman, but that's how the Outland folks say it -- they clarify that to be eligible, a player can be among "tackles, guards and centers on both sides of the ball." Basically, no defensive ends, and they live in a world constantly in a two-tight-end set.
Popek was a full-time starter in 2011 and is one of three returning starters on the offensive line for USF. He's one of four Big East players on the list and one of three offensive linemen from the conference, along with Syracuse tackle Justin Pugh and Louisville center Mario Benevides.
USF kicker Maikon Bonani was named to the Groza Award watch list on Wednesday.
