Three more pre-draft NBA workouts for Jones
It's less than a week now until the NBA draft, and I had a chance Thursday night to sit down with former USF guard Dominique Jones, in of all places, the weight room at Tampa's Berkeley Prep (long story). We'll actually have video from the interview in the next few days, but the first news is that Jones has added one more personal workout between now and the draft.
Jones knew he had workouts for the Spurs, who pick 20th, and the New Jersey Nets, who pick 27th, and it's the second workout with New Jersey. On Thursday morning, Jones got a call from the Utah Jazz, who are intriguing because their only first-round pick is the ninth overall.
"My eyes light up," Jones said of the chance to work out for a team so high in the draft. "They have the No. 9 pick, and they want me in there with (Kansas') Xavier Henry and (Fresno State's) Paul George."
Both are projected by ESPN.com as top-15 picks, so he's in there with elite company. Jones said he sees himself going between the 15th and 30th pick in the draft -- essentially the second half of the first round -- but said he isn't concerned as much with when he goes as to what kind of situation he has to start his NBA career.
We'll have lots more in the next week on Jones and the draft process, getting to sit down with NBA legends like Larry Bird and Pat Riley and convince them to make him USF's first-ever first-round draft pick ...
-- Jones also talked about how he's motivated by his doubters, and speaking of which, ESPN.com had a panel of six draft experts pick a first round on Thursday, and Jones didn't make the cut.
