Twittermania: Leavitt joins the tweet-fest

Tweet Move over, Shaq. You too, Ashton Kutcher.

USF football coach Jim Leavitt, who still proudly hand-writes letters to recruits and has generally been hesitant to embrace social technology like text-messaging, is jumping on board with

Leavitt and his assistants have set up their own pages at, the popular site that invites users to offer real-time updates of what they're doing in 140 characters or less. Leavitt started his "tweeting" on Tuesday while in Arizona, and Bulls fans -- whether you're following the Times' USF twitter or not -- can now follow Leavitt at

"I am on my way to Phoenix for the fiesta frolic," reads the first tweet from Leavitt, who has his cell phone synched to the site so he can text in updates.

And if Leavitt isn't enough, Bulls fans can follow any number of USF assistants -- running backs coach Carl Franks, defensive line coach Kevin Patrick, offensive line coach Larry Scott and tight ends coach Steve Bird have all started tweeting as well.

So if I'm proud to have 253 followers, how long before Leavitt passes me? I'll say Thursday.
