Former USF quarterback Matt Grothe has been cut by the UFL's Florida Tuskers, less than two weeks before the team's season begins.

"I really enjoyed the time I spent with the Tuskers and gained a lot of pro experience, which will help further my football career," Grothe said in a statement Monday night.

Grothe, whose senior year was cut short last fall by a knee injury, had returned to full health and signed with the Tuskers, who open their season in 12 days. The Tuskers have the UFL's returning MVP in quarterback Brook Bollinger, and Grothe was competing with Arena Football veteran Chris Greisen for a backup spot.

"Matt came in and did some good things and showed continued improvement throughout camp," coach Jay Gruden told the Orlando Sentinel. "Unfortunately, with a 52-man roster, we are limited to two quarterback spots. ... In the end I just felt better going with the more experienced player. Matt's a young guy and hopefully he will get other opportunities to continue his playing career at the professional level."

Grothe is the second USF alum cut by the Tuskers this week, following defensive end Jarriett Buie. Receiver Huey Whittaker and safety J.R. Reed remain on the Orlando team's roster. Grothe could sign with another UFL team, or could opt for the CFL, which he had considered this spring before signing with the Tuskers. He was invited to the Bucs' rookie minicamp but was not offered a contract.
